Chuck Cheesman: Music

Circus (demo)

(words and music by Chuck Cheesman)
This is the only break-up song I have ever written. Obviously (and fortunately) I had to step into another person's shoes. This demo was recorded in my home studio.
You own the spotlight when we take the stage.
I am a lion pacing my cage,
and this love is a circus
full of sideshows and clowns.

You keep me off balance, put the sting in my back.
Our friends do bear witness to your ringmaster act.
So put up the big top
and pound the stakes down.

I've jumped through hoops,
swallowed your fire.
There was no net but I walked the high wire.
I joined the circus
when you brought the circus to town.
I joined the circus
when you brought the circus around.

You crack the whip and I turn the wheel.
Your aim is still true now but I hardly feel.
If I was a sucker,
I'm hardly alone in this crowd.

You own the spotlight when we take the stage.
I am a lion pacing my cage...

What would you do if you entered the lion's cage,
locked the door, turned, and you noticed the lion had changed?
The show must go on but the look in his eye is strange!

I've jumped through hoops,
swallowed your fire.
There was no net but I walked the high wire.
I joined the circus
when you brought the circus to town.
I joined the circus
when you brought the circus around.

So tear down the big top.
Pull up the stakes from the ground.
Load up the caravan.
It's time for the circus...
Time for the circus...
Finally this show is leaving town.
